Trekking Kokoda was very much an ‘ad hoc’ arrangement from the time we led our first group across in 1992.

There were no established facilities in place, no communication systems and no reliable maps.

But of more concern, there was no interest in the place from the Australian government.

This paper, submitted in 1994, was based on feedback we had received from our trekkers over the previous four years and our discussions with our PNG support crews and local villagers.

The need for a Master Plan was evident in those early days along with memorials at significant sites.
