Motion by the Hon. CHARLIE LYNN agreed to:
1. That this House notes that:
(a) on Saturday 22 June 2013, Special Forces soldier Corporal Cameron Stewart Baird was killed in action in Afghanistan,
(b) Corporal Baird, a member of the Sydney-based 2nd Commando Regiment and a recipient of the Medal for Gallantry, died when he was shot during a clash with insurgents,
(c) Corporal Baird was the fortieth Australian soldier to die in Afghanistan,
(d) Corporal Baird’s mates describe him as one of the most iconic figures in the Regiment, and he was on his fifth tour of Afghanistan having previously served in Iraq and Timor-Leste, and
(e) the Chief of the Defence Force, General David Hurley, AC, DSC, said “In combat, and as a Team Commander, he was the man to watch and never happier than when the situation demanded decisive action and courage.”
2. That this House place on record its deep regrets and appreciation of his service to his country and tender its profound sympathy to his families in their bereavement.
