Kokoda Development Program: 2009-2010

Kokoda Trek Operators have been advised by the Department of Environment, Heritage, Water and the Arts of the following planned activities as part of the Kokoda Development Program in 2009-2010:

Note: Please note that the below-listed activities and dates are indicative. Actual activities and dates will be subject to a range of factors, for example:

– Weather: construction activities have been delayed to the extended wet season (for example, AusAID advises that all construction work for Kokoda, Kovelo, Hoi, Isurava, Alola and Abuari is delayed as a result of the river crossing at Kumusi River. Construction will re-commence once a temporary bridge is installed);
– Community availability/willingness to participate;
– District and Provincial Government schedules – for example classroom construction needs to align with the timing of provision of a teacher by the Provincial Government.

Kokoda – July 2009 to February 2010
• Refurbish and repair Kokoda Health Centre
• Construction of a ‘Waiting Haus’ for high risk pregnant women (semi permanent construction), and construction of a kook haus with community support, construction of two pit toilets and two bucket showers for Waiting Haus, installation of incinerator
• Construction of two workshop buildings at Kokoda Vocational School
• Construction of additional toilets at Kokoda Elementary, Primary and vocational schools
• Installation of water tanks at Kokoda Elementary, Primary and vocational schools
• Supply and installation of additional teachers’ and students’ desks/chairs at primary school
• Maintenance on existing classrooms and teachers’ houses
• Support KDHC to have a functional rural laboratory for testing malaria, STIs and other communicable diseases as well as basic lab tests
• Installation of solar lights
• Purchase and distribution of essential clinical equipment including infection control and waste management training programs
• Purchase and distribution of basic furniture and fittings – office, clinic, maternal and child health
• Support quarterly reviews of Kokoda Health Centres
• Support recruitment of a registered midwife for District Health Centre
• Conduct adult and community training opportunities at Kokoda Skills Institute
• Conduct ongoing monthly immunisation and Child Health Patrols

Hoi (Timing and service levels to be determined following consultation with Oro Provincial Government)
• Conduct ongoing monthly immunisation and Child Health Patrols
• Feasibility study on water supply

Kovelo – (Timing and service levels to be determined following consultation with Oro Provincial Government)
• Upgrade elementary school
• Ongoing monthly immunisation and Child Health Patrols
• Feasibility study on water supply
• Facilitate sports training by participants from Kokoda course (sports equipment already provided)

Isurava – (Timing and service levels to be determined following consultation with Oro Provincial Government)
• Re-establish the elementary school
• Establish Community School – Construction of one multi-purpose classroom
• Construction of one girls’ VIP toilet
• Construction of one teacher’s permanent house
• Establish aid post
• Undertake village water supply study

Alola – (Timing and service levels to be determined following consultation with Oro Provincial Government)
• Re-establish elementary school
• Ongoing monthly Immunisation and Child Health Patrols
• Undertake feasibility study on water supply

Abuari – (Timing and service levels to be determined following consultation with Oro Provincial Government)
• Construction of pit toilets, two bucket showers and rural incinerator at aid post
• Installation of water supply for aid post
• Installation of solar lights, health radio, battery and solar panels
• Purchase of essential infection control equipment
• Purchase and distribution of basic furniture and fittings – office, clinic, maternal and child health and residence
• Undertake small scale water and rural electrification survey
• Maintenance to existing water supply
• Ongoing monthly immunisation and Child Health Patrols
• Conversion of community school to elementary school

Kagi – (July 2009 to April 2010)
• Establish Kagi Elementary School

Aid Post
• Construction of two toilets and bucket showers, install incinerator
• Installation of solar lights, health radio, battery and solar panels
• Purchase essential infection control equipment
• Purchase and distribution of basic furniture and fittings – office, clinic, maternal and child health and residence
• Small scale water and rural electrification survey
• Maintenance to existing water supply

Kavovo Primary School (between Kagi and Naduri) – (July 2009 to April 2010)
• Construction of two dormitories and two ablution blocks at Kavovo
• Installation of solar power, including lighting and power outlets to classrooms, dormitories, ablution blocks and teachers’ houses

Naduri – (July 2009 to April 2010)
• Establish Naduri Elementary School
• Construction of a new community health post facility and two staff houses
• Construction of Haus Win Resting Place (health promotion / women’s meeting place)
• Installation of water tank and feeder and reticulation;
• Construction of toilets and bucket showers, install incinerator
• Installation of solar lights in health post
• Purchase of clinical equipment for birthing and infection control
• Purchase and distribution of basic furniture and fittings – office, clinic, maternal and child health and residence
• Small scale water and rural electrification survey
• Maintenance to existing water supply
• Women’s leadership training
• Sports training

Launumu – (July 2009 – December 2009)
• Small scale water and rural electrification survey
• Maintenance to existing water supply
• Basic food preparation and small scale business projects
• Ongoing monthly Immunisation and Child Health Patrols

Efogi – (July 2009 to December 2009)
• Construction of a double classroom with office/storeroom and two teachers’ houses at Efogi Primary
• Complete installation of remaining toilets and showers at Efogi health centre
• Engage the community to build a traditional ‘Waiting Haus’ and cook house
• Supply and installation of additional teachers’ and students’ desks/chairs
• Support a functional rural laboratory for testing malaria, STIs and other communicable diseases
• Installation of solar lights
• Small scale water and rural electrification survey
• Maintenance to existing water supply
• Ongoing monthly Immunisation and Child Health Patrols

Enivilogo – (July 2009 to May 2010)

Aid Post
• Develop Aid Post as a community health post
• Build Haus traditional ‘Waiting Haus’ (health promotion / women’s meeting place)

• Purchase of essential infection control equipment

• Construction of one double classroom with office/storeroom at Naoro Elementary School

Aid Post
• Support Executive Excellence with construction of Aid Post
• Construction of staff house, provide water supply, two pit toilets, two bucket showers, laundry tub and incinerator
• Installation of solar lights, health radio, battery and solar panels
• Purchase and distribution of Aid Post kit (essential antibiotics, anti-malarias etc) and other clinical equipment

Vesulogo (July 2009 to October 2009)
• Aid Post maintenance
• Construct an two external pit toilets and two bucket showers and laundry tubs and maintenance to water tank and taps into the Aid Post
• Install rural incinerator and solar lights
• Work with Salvation Army Health Services to maintain water tank, guttering, down pipes and feeder and provide reticulation
• Construction of a double classroom with office/storeroom and installation of two rain water tanks at Vesulogo elementary school
• Infection control program

• Training for Village Health Volunteers for Sogeri Valley
