It is a sad state of affairs that the &quot;spin-meisters&quot; are generally those who write history, so I am very glad to read this very carefully weighed account of history.

Undoubtedly, MacArthur was a dreadful human being, I recently read the account of his liberation of Manila (which should have been bypassed until the end of the war) and first heard of the 100,000 civilian deaths caused by his using artillery to &quot;liberate&quot; the Spanish Quarter in the city.</description>
